As you can see above our factory door speakers in the Type25 we far from in their prime. Not to mention the limited power being that a 4 inches speaker mounted so low in the doors can provide.

When you compare it to these 6.5inch component speakers that will enable the tweeters to be mounted much higher up. thus giving what they call a much better sound stage. Bass in any soundsystem is no directional so is less fussy where its mounted - it's the detail in the audio that you want to mount carefully

We started by stripping all the door hardware off and making a template of the aperture the old speaker used to flap around in. I say that because the only stabilty the speaker got was from beign screwed to the door card itself. The more solid you can mount your audio the better the results will be

We transferred our template onto several scraps of 12mm thick mdf, glued them together with wood glue and left them clamped overnight

Once dry this slottted into the door only requiring a little trimming to get to fit snuggly

The baffle was screwed into place before beign given a liveral coating of glue in order to stick the next inner baffle into the hole. This then brings the mounting surface flush with the surface of the door.

This is screwed whilst the glue drys

Once dry you cut the new hole for your speaker from the template provided with the product. Everyone says you can only fit a 5.5 or 6inch speaker in a type 25 without cutting metal and they are more or less right. This shot shows how much more I need to over size the hole in order to fit a more common 6.5inch speaker

You may wish to fibreglass your board firmly in place for complete air-tightness. We didn't on this occasion and just upped our quoter of sound deadening instead by covering with some Dynamat sheeting sold in packs from Just Kampers (www.justkampers.com)
We also deadened the inside skin of the door as part of our full Noisekiller sound deadening kit (www.noisekiller.co.uk) which will stop that annoying rattle you always here from the boy racers cars at traffic lights.

They you go. Not only have you got a 6.5inch mid driver speaker in your bus now but aesthetically it is centrally mounted in the door card unlike the facctory cut-outs that had then under you leg somewhere. DON'T STOP THERE THOUGH!!!

This is often the most important and frequently forgotten step in the
hole procedure.
If your door weather strips on the bus are perished then they are going to let in water the next time it rains. You can tape polythene into the inside of the door so it runs over the speaker and will not get the speaker cone damp or just do it proparly and replace your seals. This set of Just Kamper (www.justkampers.com) window seals press tightly against the glass now ensuring my good work should be safe for a few years yet.
We will be feature more audio install tips and full howtos in future issue of Camper&Bus so keep a look out soon.
