Notch Back!

Whilst holidaying in Falmouth last summer James from our sister mag VW Camper&Bus got talking to the owner of the campsite about VWs. The owner, Alan Jewell said he used to own a ‘63 Notchback that had belonged to his great uncle Frank Knowles. Frank got it from his brother-in-law, Jack Pollard who owned Pollards Garage, a VW franchise in Falmouth. Frank was a farmer and used the Notch until the late 70s when he became ill, often carrying vast quantities of spuds around the farm! As Frank couldn't use it anymore Alan took it over and drove it until the lure of fast Fords became too great. In 1984, Brian Johnston found the Notchback in Alan's barn and bought it. Anyway, Alan told James he would buy his old Notch back if it was still around, James did a spot of digging and then Jon Gilbert recognized the number plate as that of a car belonging to Rich Oakley on the Resto-cal forum and a previous feature car. We featured it back in December 1991.
James put them in touch and Rich sold this very rare car back to Alan. How cool is that?
