Bug Jam Fastest Ghia competition

The fastest Karmann Ghia at Bug Jam 2008

So the stage was set on Saturday at Bug Jam to find the quickest Karmann Ghia at the show, reports Lee Applebee.

“With a £150 first price and a fantastic one-off trophy of a replica helmet signwritten and pin-striped by Pro-Sign (thanks a lot, Neil and Mandy).
Six Ghia’s were having ago on Saturday, all in various states of tune and a number with stock engines. I am sorry I didn’t get everyone’s times but I am sure you know what time you did. Once I have a chance I will get all the times from Bug Jam and get them onto the website and then we can start a list of the top 10 fastest cars. All you need to keep the list updated is to send me a copy of your timing slip.
And to all those Ghias that were lurking in the fields with big cc motors or turbo’s hanging out the back – where were you? Why fit a big engine if you won’t have a go!
Thanks to all those that had a go – it was good to see a mixture of stock and modified cars having a go”.

1st Price - Simon Thorne 15.52sec@83mph,
2109cc, 48 Dells, Rancho freeway flyer gearbox. Simon has previously ran 14.9sec, but couldn’t quite make it back into the 14s over the weekend. Well done Simon, and I hope to see you at VW Action to take up the challenge.

2nd Place - Mick Atkinson 17.31sec@75mph,
1776cc with CB blow-through turbo kit. Mick was running in the new turbo kit, previously in Nat Asp form the engine was running 16s. Mick was trying hard all day to get a decent time in but was having a few problems and didn’t managed to do a full power pass.

3rd Place
- Clive Richardson 19.09sec@71.23mph, 1776cc. Even our very own club chairman was having a go! Apparently, Clive is now on

Beige against the Machine

Not all Cal Lookers need a huge engine to make their point, as this 1956 shows. Its beige bodywork, however, looks the part to a tee
