VW Drag Racing Club Summer Nationals

Following the excursion to Shakespeare County Raceway in May, it was back to the Pod again for the VWDRC over the 14-15 June for round 4

As this round was taking place at the Summer Nationals, all the old favourites were there: Pro Modified, Nostalgia Fuel, Wild Bunch and Outlaw Anglias. With a superb weather forecast, we knew it was going to be a great weekend, and with more than 400 competitors to be whittled down to 25 class winners, the Pod crew would have to operate like clockwork.
The VWDRC had all three classes out for this meeting: Pro, Alternate Engine and Sportsman.
Pro was represented by James Hodson and Paul Jordan in their Golf and Scirocco, but also saw a warm return for Steve Parfitt in his revamped Turbo Beetle. The Pro final was as close as we’ve seen this year, with James taking the win and the round being decided pretty much on reaction times.
The Alternate Engine qualifying was close too, as the top four were separated by less 0.14, with Ian Huggan’s Subaru-powered Bug ‘The Darkside’ coming out on top. Matt Attwood took the final though, in his Rover V8-motivated Fastback.
VW Sportsman saw incredible performances from the entire field. The top five qualifiers were all less than 1/10-second off their times, with Martin Ayton leading the field. The eliminations were all extremely close, and eventually saw Spencer Tramm line up against Craig Allen. Neither of these guys are strangers to round finals, but for the second time this year Spencer took the win.
Round 5 was held at Bug Jam over July 18-20, so watch out for the full report next month. Meanwhile, for more information and an explanation of the rules, log on to www.VWDRC.com.
