The 36hp Land Speed Challenge

The latest from in the world of the 36 horse drawn land speed challenge

East coast National 36hp (UK 34hp) Land Speed Challenge racer and current record holder Bruce Cook returned with his stone stock 36hp powered '51 Split-window Bug to Maxton, North Carolina, for the 17 May 2008 land speed racing event and totally destroyed the existing record along with Volkswagen’s official claims of how fast a stock 36hp Beetle can go. Under ideal, wind-free conditions, and having only replaced the stock single-tip muffler with a stock dual-tip exhaust, enlarging the main jet and readjusting the timing, Bruce drove the Bug to a top speed of 73.006mph, surpassing his old 68mph record (and VW’s claimed maximum speed for 36hp Bugs) by almost five mph. Numerous 36hp Challenge cars are being prepared around the country as well as in Ireland to challenge the existing 36hp records. For more information, dates and links to land speed racing,
