It doesn't seem five minutes ago that we were bemoaning in this very magazine the fact that you don't see VWs in daily use on the roads any more. Yet, as I write this at the height of summer, I seem to see one every day and everywhere I go. More correctly, I seem to see VW Buses everywhere I go. Hell, the odd one even turns up on second-hand car lots around my way, amongst arrays of prestige motors, and with price tags to match. The majority I see though are of two distinct types - stock, or stock but slammed over a set of rims. But there's always someone willing to do something different, to try and make their VW Bus stand out from the crowd, and Stacey Wetnight from Carmichael, California, is one of those. A confirmed VW and motorcycle fanatic, British-born Stacey has a dream - a dream that one day he'll own a Harley Davidson Bobber, or maybe an Ultra Glide.

In the meantime though, he decided to do something with his Bus that would make him feel like he was getting one step nearer to that dream, and also something that he felt would make his Bus stand out from the crowds of others that turn up to every VW show he goes to. "I was tired of seeing Panels with nothing in the back, or just a seat, so decided I'd make mine into a mobile Harley service wagon," he told us. Neat idea. That way he's got a Bus with a theme that's relevant to his interests, and also a Bus that he can turn up to bike events with and not feel entirely out of place. "If all goes to plan, I'm going to take the Panel to South Dakota for the Sturgis Bike Week in August - that should be tons of fun," he continued.

The idea of a Panel Van used as a promotional vehicle isn't new - they were favourites for this kind of thing from day one, their expansive sides offering the perfect place to put your company name and advertise your business - and Norwegian Pal Rui took a similar route to Stacey with his Porsche support Barndoor that he built several years ago, but Stacey's Bus is the first we've seen to link VWs and Harleys together.
