In 1985, production of the Beetle stopped in all but Brazil, Mexico and Peru, and collectively during this year these three countries turned out just over 86,000 units.
The Volkswagen factory in Puebla, Mexico was churning out El Vochito solely for the European market; this, unfortunately, was going to be the last year for the Beetle in Europe. To celebrate, Volkswagen geared up to produce the special edition Jubilee model, to hit European shores as the final ‘officially' imported Beetle. During that same year, Fabio Rizzuto's car also rolled off the production line in Puebla and was surely destined to spend its days as a taxi pounding the streets of Mexico. However, the previous owner had other ideas, as they'd ordered it for life in Italy. Fortunately for Fabio, who was just out of nappies at the time, the previous owner had, like most Italians, good taste and chose the car in this stunning Selva green (LA6D). It's as though VW had known about Fabio's plans.
Fabio, a 20-something who lives close to one of Europe's main fashion capitals, Milan, spotted the Maggiolino at a garage near the university where he was studying in 2004. Once a deal was struck and the car was in his possession, he set about transforming his first project into what you see here. "I'd never changed an exhaust on a scooter before tackling this", he says.
