Poison Berry – ’56 Oval Ragtop

Building a show car in 15 months is a tough call but that’s exactly how long it took to turn this Oval into a class-winning corker

Tim Miller hails from Marana in Arizona, USA and shares his life with his wife Amy and their four children. At this point you may already be wondering how he finds time to indulge his hobby but he does and occasionally his family even help out. Well, the family that plays together stays together, as they say, but Tim himself is no VW virgin, having had his first taste of VWs at a young age when his father and brother both owned VWs. As is often the way once you catch the VW bug, before you know it you have a string of old Beetles under your belt. Before his current ride, Tim's garage has been home to two Karmann Cabriolet Bugs, a RHD '59 Bug, a '58 Ragtop, a '57 Oval, two Split Buses, a '66 and a '66 21-Window and, completing the line-up, a '64 Notchback. But take it from us, this Oval Ragtop is his best one yet.

Purchased in 2007, this 1956 model was in very good shape, having been out and about on the local show circuit prior to Tim purchasing it. It looked similar in colour to where it's at now and ran original smoothies. This was to be Tim's first proper build from the ground up, so having a solid base was going to be vital, especially when you consider how much detailing he was about to embark on! For the amount of labour that's gone into it, it's astounding that this piece of automotive artwork took Tim only 15 months from start to finish. Now, could you do better in 15 months? We're seriously impressed with Tim's commitment to his project.
