You better get used to the name Eric Jones because he is rapidly turning into a serial restorer and his creations are always top notch so you can expect to see them here in VolksWorld. You might remember his immaculate Oval Cabriolet in our February issue and he also has a 1956 RHD Oval that's about to make its debut but for now I think we should focus on this beautiful Oval before he waves his magic wand over any more VWs.

So what drives a man to go to such lengths when restoring vintage VWs to better than new condition, to tastefully accessorise each car and to detail to such a standard that judges are blown away? Who cares? I really don't, and I'm not a psychiatrist so I'll leave the analysis to someone in the know. All I know is that I love the attention to detail from start to finish that Eric Jones brings to each project and this one is no exception to the rule.

In September 2007, Eric was visiting Bob Koch when he spotted a rather interesting Oval in the back of the workshop. Bob had the '53 waiting in the wings for a full restoration but with his workload increasing he knew he wouldn't get around to restoring the Oval so he offered it to Eric. Of course Eric said yes and wasted no time in getting his new project home for a full evaluation. What Eric had bought was a very rare car indeed. March 10th 1953 saw the demise of the Split Window Beetle and the first Oval Window Beetle rolled off the production line. Eric's car was built on October 16th 1953 and was shipped from Wolfsburg in Germany to the US where the salesman at Competition Motors of Hollywood, California signed it into stock
