Type 3 of a kind – ’65 Notchback

Restoring one Notch to this standard in America is tricky, but building three is a major undertaking. Meet Hank Clemmons - he’s lost the plot

In our April issue, we brought you a feature on The 1500 Club - an internet-based club for owners of stock pre-'65 Type 3s. Though the club is open to anyone and has members all over the world, in that feature we had a picture of no less than seven Notchbacks belonging to Californian members of the club. Now that would be an impressive number of the lesser-spotted Notch to see in one place here in the UK, or even in Germany where these cars were made, but it's damned impressive to see in America, where each and every one of them must have at some time been a personal import into the country. But you know what VW fans are like - the harder something is to find, or the more unusual it is, the more people want it and will go to great lengths to seek it out. The very fact that the Notchback was never officially sold in America makes them all the more desirable to a certain type of VW lover, but also means there's a lot of people looking for a small number of cars. So for one person to have three of them shows true dedication, and a not inconsiderable amount of time spent on the internet looking for them and for parts for them I shouldn't wonder.
