One thing about classic Volkswagens is that you can buy a perfectly restored or ratted example and find you just can't help yourself from taking something off or adding something new to it. It seems buying one that's good to go and enjoying it on the open road is only part of the fun. The enjoyment in putting one's own stamp on a VW is the other, and Oli Bradshaw fell into this latter category when he bought his dream car, a perfectly presentable Oval Window Beetle which was ready to drive. But Oli had bigger plans.
The 27-year-old from Newbury had kept a string of VWs and just keeps on adding to the list. It all started when Oli and his girlfriend Jade needed a van to go travelling in and so they spent a lot of time looking at many Type 25s with the ice-cream tub on the top, as he describes them, but none of them were floating his boat. Then, just as the duo were reaching their wits' end, they found a 1972 Bay for sale at a local garage. This was just before the Camper boom kicked in and they picked it up for £2,500. After using it for a couple of years and with no work done to it during that time, they were able to sell it on for a cool £5,500.
Resisting his family's wish to see him now buy something reliable, practical and ultimately boring like a Fiesta, Oli next went out and bought a 1964 Beetle.
