Do you have a yen to travel to off-beat places, but worry about the accommodation? Do you love the idea of an outdoor holiday, but want your comfort, too? Want to roam, but like a homey feeling? The Volkswagen Camper is for you!" So said the original sales brochure for a 1961 Westfalia Camper. When it came to camper conversions, there were none finer than those offered by Westfalia and sold through VW dealers, and the Bus you see here is the top-of-the-line model for that year, a so-called SO34. For those who may be unaware, the SO number refers to the level of finish and the upholstery option, and in '61 you could have either an SO34 or an SO35 version. The 34 came with white cabinets, the 35 dark wood versions.
That same brochure continues: "It's not just a converted sedan - and you don't have to tow a cumbersome trailer either... it's the handiest, handsomest, home-in-a-station wagon you ever did see. Did we say "Station Wagon?" Well, name it what you will - there's just nothing around to compare it with. On fun and thrill-packed vacations away from it all, for hunting and fishing, for spur-of-the-moment trips, the VW Camper is your motorised home..." We couldn't put it better ourselves, so we haven't.
