Right from the very earliest days of VW production, people have been modifying their cars, and more often than not the modified parts came from Porsche. It was logical, after all, as many a knowledgeable person will tell you: Porsche parts fit straight onto Beetles. Oh, and did you know that Porsche designed the Beetle? (‘Yeah, yeah,' we all reply wearily).
And 60 years down the line, things haven't changed that much. Still, if people want to make a Beetle - or in these days, more often than not a Bus - go faster and look faster, they often look to the Stuttgart manufacturer for inspiration and parts. Porsche brakes, Porsche seats, Porsche steering wheels, Porsche gauges, Porsche wheels and even, in the more extreme cases, Porsche engines, gearboxes and suspension assemblies have all found their way under the skin of the humble Volkswagen. But the trouble is, pretty much anything with a Porsche badge on it comes with a Porsche price tag (unless it's off any of those parts-bin VW/Audis that masquerade as Porsches, of course), which has meant that this style of modified VW has traditionally been an expensive one to build. If we look to our row of pigeonholes, we call them German Lookers - more for the fact that, as a style of car, that's the country they generally emanate from than the fact that the parts used to build them happen to be German.
