Taste for more - '57 Karmann Cabriolet

You really have to admire someone who – during a full restoration of not one, but two Oval Window Beetles – takes time out to buy and complete an unfinished project for no other reason than he can afford to...

VW Beetle Cabriolet

That's right, the owner of this 1957 Karmann Cabriolet was in the middle of restoring two Ovals when he bought this beauty as an 80 per cent finished project and decided to finish it. Maybe I'm naive, but I really admire someone like Eric Jones who can do this while continuing with the restoration of his two Ovals. I can understand the point that cooking for three is just as easy as cooking for two, but I don't know if that analogy applies to the garage as well - especially when you're talking Oval Window Beetles where parts, if you can locate them, are not cheap.
Come to think of it, restoring three Seventies' Beetles would be a drain on anyone's resources, so when we heard that Eric had welcomed a third unfinished Bug into his flock, we had to find out why this man hadn't been sent to a special room with very soft walls.
Three's a party
Thirty-six-year-old Eric Jones hails from Chino in sunny California and has been interested in vintage VWs since he was a teenager. It had always been his dream to own and restore vintage VWs and he is certainly embracing that passion now as he's been working hard over the last four years to restore and detail two Oval Window Beetles.
Having bought a Sixties' Bug 15 years ago, Eric thought that the car would signify the beginning of a long association with VWs, but the Bug was so rotten he ended up stripping it down and selling it for spares. In the meantime, Eric twisted nuts and bolts on Hondas. That was until a 1956 RHD Beetle came his way and he was back on the VW road. Owning the 1956 was a dream, but at around the same time an opportunity came up to buy a 1953 US-delivered Oval Window Beetle that was just too good to pass up, so he bought that too.
