Paint or Patina – ’76 Bay Window

Everywhere I go these days I'm bombarded by Bay Window Buses. I open the Sunday Times and they're there, enticing me on get-away-from-it-all holidays in the UK. I walk down my local high street and some spiky-haired punker (or is it a trendy classical violinist? I never can tell) calls out to me from the bus stops proclaiming something about butter, and every time I turn on the TV it seems there's always one in shot. Somewhere. The most unlikely people I know, who have previously shown no interest in my passion for old Volkswagens, are suddenly making noises about wanting to own one - including my old man for goodness sake.
In short, VW Buses seem to be the must-have accessory of the decade, whether you're an ad man or a family man. Yet despite all this, modified Bay Windows remain few and far between. There are plenty of scruffy, lowered ones around, of course, but to make a feature car we need a little more than just that. Prime quality unrestored, or even restored, stockers are all well and good - and undoubtedly, highly desirable these days - but quite simply they don't make for very interesting features, either for us to write or you to read. We've always seen Bays as part of the scene and, as such, part of VolksWorld too, yet they've traditionally taken a back seat to Splits in both desirability and in people's willingness to pour money into them and turn them into show winners. But is that all about to change we wonder?
