Object of envy - '66 Crew Cab

Everyone wants a Deluxe, right? But if you haven't got one, what's the next best thing? Make what you've got look like one! Then add a honking turbo motor for good measure

VW Magazine Car of the week

Only the other day I was standing in the workshop with a couple of friends discussing the amount of money that gets put into VWs these days - specifically Buses. Those of you closer to 40 than 20 will remember the days when Split Screen Buses were little more than worthless workhorses, vehicles you could barely give away to anyone but the most ardent enthusiast, yet today they outnumber Beetles on the road, at shows and as objects of desire for people both inside and outside the VW scene. Jarrett Lemley from Arizona is typical of the type of owner of this kind of aspirational vehicle, being 40 now, having been into the scene since he was a teenager, introduced through friends in high school and cutting his teeth on a couple of mid-Sixties Bugs. His aspiration to owning a Barndoor Samba isn't uncommon either, and while there's no doubt the fabled 23-window is the object of a great many people's desire, that didn't stop this Bus here - once just a lowly Double Cab commercial - being voted ‘the car I want a ride in most' at a benefit event held in Tempe, Arizona. What a cool idea for a trophy and, when you read the spec, you'll see why Jarrett's '66 Crew was the perfect ride to win it.
