Driven – ’75 2276 Beetle

Richard Cooper’s search for the ultimate street Beetle took 10 years to come together, but the result sure was worth the wait

Here's one to test your collective memories: Recognise this car? Nope, didn't think so. Oh, you think you do? You reckon you might have seen it at the VolksWorld Show a few years ago - six, to be precise. But don't be too pleased with yourself, at least not unless you clocked the registration number and realised this car is the same one we featured in our September 2002 issue under the title ‘Hi-Tech Hot Rod'. Though that headline may not have been strictly correct, one thing that is true is that this car has been a hi-tech hot VW in one form or another for most of this decade, but now it has finally become the car its owner, Richard Cooper, dreamt of way back in 1987 when he bought a 1975 1200cc Beetle from Belgium (hence the left-hand driving position).
We'll forgive you at this point for not remembering its previous incarnation because back then this car was a pretty standard looking Lofoten Green late model looker, originally rolling on ATS Cups, but later swapped onto 17-inch Porsche Boxster rims. It was what lay under the stock bodywork, though, that marked this out as something a bit - make that a lot - special. How about a Gene Berg 5-speed and a full house, 2276cc, fuel-injected motor for starters. Then there were the four-wheel Kerscher disc brakes, fully worked suspension... the list went on. In short, this was a properly sorted car the first time round, so why mess with a good thing? Richard: "I just felt it needed a bit of a freshen up. I'm good friends with Paul Woodhead, and he suggested I speak to Simon and Shane at The Paintbox, so I did."
