Flake off – GP Beach Buggy

As this GP Buggy has changed hands and appearance slightly since completion, let's start with the builder first - Christian Lacey, or Kip as he is known to his mates on Guernsey. Like so many people in the VW scene who had many unfinished projects waiting in the wings, he had said that he wasn't going to buy another project until all of the others were finished and he certainly had quite a collection, which included a 1967 Ragtop Beetle that was being welded at the time, a 1965 Devon Camper, a 1964 OG paint Notchback and a 1303 Cabrio that later found its way onto these pages in August 2007 as a bright Green German Look. So yes, the world and its mother would have said that Kip ought to finish what he had. But us Dub nuts don't live in the real world, do we? And if you answer that by thinking ‘we do', put this magazine down right now and go out to your garage to look at the patina'd coolbox you just paid top dollar for to use as an accessory. Real world? I don't think so! Either way, it's a fun world and one that throws up bargains too good to miss just when you've decided no more projects.
Once Kip saw the VolksWorld feature on Kieron Smith's Buggy, he went straight to his stash of VW porn (VolksWorld, of course) and began reading all he could about Buggies, even though he wasn't intent on buying another project, of course! Coincidentally, his friend happened to mention that he had seen a Buggy that might be for sale and that just kindled Kip's desire. Unfortunately that Buggy turned out to be not for sale, so with his enthusiasm quashed he parked the idea. Then two weeks passed and the phone rang to say that the Buggy was now for sale and at only £350 it was worth a look.
