Blue Stratos – ’54 Oval

As soon as we met the owner of this Oval we knew we had to feature it. Less than an hour later we’d set up the lights and were shooting it!

After owning a string of late models, Chris Weeling from the Netherlands developed an itch that only a pre-'67 Beetle could cure. The soothing ointment came in the form of this fully restored 1954 Oval.
Stand near any early Volkswagen at the next show you go to and you will hear different names being bandied about regarding particular shades of Beetles on display. Early Beetles had some great colour options, however they often cause confusion when people try to describe them. Take L227 Strato-Silver Blue, for example - the colour of this Oval here. Quite how Volkswagen decided that it should have silver in the name is beyond us, as you can clearly see, it's blue! But no matter what you call it, you have to agree that this is a stunning colour and no doubt we will see more VWs being painted in Strato-Silver Blue.
For as long as Chris Weeling can remember there has been a VW in his life and that goes back to the very beginning. Chris' parents had an orange 1970 1300 Beetle when he was born and since then he has been collecting everything VW. He still has a competition entry form from when he was young where the first prize was a brand new Beetle Karmann Cabriolet. Needless to say, he didn't win that but he still treasures it after all these years. What this does show is Chris' love for all things VW. So it made perfect sense as soon as Chris passed his driving test in 1991 to buy a Beetle; a red 1973 1300L Beetle was what he bought and, as he says "it was a safety hazard".
