The Dyno Pincher Beetle

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be. So goes the old witticism. But let's face it, when it comes to nostalgic VW race cars, there have been quite a few of them built in the last few years - from Keith Seume's Skinback to Travis Rider's magnificent Inch Pincher IV to Takashi Komori's period perfect Deano Dyno Soar to Russell Ritchie's lookalike Underdog, alongside a host of cars that look very similar to other famous race cars from the past. In some rare cases, original race cars have been dug out of retirement and brought out to play again. In other cases cars have been built as homages to well-known cars, while across Europe a glut of nostalgia-styled Gassers has appeared, many taking their inspiration from known cars but not necessarily copying them. However, this latest one has to be a first - a car built to resemble a cartoon of a nostalgia race car that never actually existed in the first place. Yep, that vision in purple and pink that visitors to the VolksWorld Show saw spinning around in glorious technicolour under the fluorescent tubes at Sandown Park is just that, though unless you are a regular reader of France's leading VW magazine, chances are you wouldn't have realised its provenance.
