1971 Notchback

Like Michael Jackson’s face, Michael Huck’s Notchback is made up from parts from several different sources.
But in this case, the end result is a definite improvement

VW Type 3 Notchback

The divide between ‘early' and ‘late' VWs is becoming more apparent all the time, whether it's Cabriolets or Split Buses, Beetles or Bay Windows, everyone it seems wants the older ones, leaving the late models on the sideline. Yes, some people have built good looking late model Beetles but, be honest, when did you last see a good looking late Type 3 Notchback? I mean, look at the thing - even the most myopic would have to admit it's butt ugly. The Roman nose on the front of all late Model Types 3s is an acquired taste, but it pales into insignificance alongside the rest of the design updates VW saw fit to impose upon the cars in August 1969. The engorged bumpers did the previously svelte look no favours whatsoever, and one glance at the bloated tail lights is enough to turn anyone to the dark side. Prior to that fateful month in the summer of '69, the Notch is a much loved and sought after car, post that date, it's a ginger step kid with acne. Thankfully, VW in Germany pulled the plug on production soon after, in June '73, and not before time.
