Hussein lives in Welling, Kent and is in with a bunch of guys who are seriously into building heavyweight VWs. Regular readers will recall the 2008 VolksWorld Show Best of Show winner built by Terry Fuller that made the front cover a year ago. That was another car to come from this tight knit group. A lot of their meddling is down to James Wotton, who runs the specialist workshop Vee Dub in Welling. He has not only been heavily involved in both these projects, he is also the one who kept pushing Hussein throughout the five-year build of this car.
Jim told us he kept Hussein motivated by telling him, "That's not going to be good enough to win awards," while pointing out the most minor areas of the car. His advice worked - after missing the planned debut for the car, the 2008 VolksWorld Show, Hussein eventually got the car done in time for Bug Jam where he not only took Best Cabriolet, but also Best of Show - add to this the fact he won on his birthday and you can imagine what that day meant to him as he scooped one of the top accolades in our little world!
The story starts when Hussein first got into VWs. "I sat in one and that was it!" he says. That was 20 years ago, when he was 16 years old. His first Beetle was a '67, slammed and running on Fuchs, but the Cabriolet you see here was a car he used to see parked up by the side of the road in Crystal Palace, South London and every time he drove past it he used to think ‘if that ever comes up for sale, I'm having it'. A couple of years later, in 2000, Hussein's wish came true.
