'58 lowlight VW Karmann Ghia

Sometimes, buying built is the quickest way to realise your dream. Ask
Fredy Roturier - he spent 14 years restoring a 1970 Cabriolet Beetle,
then promptly sold it and bought this car already finished

Building a car is a major undertaking - take it from me - and the hardest part of all is finishing it. Not only that, if you've set your heart on something that will blow the doors of yer dad's Ferrari, then the financial investment is massive. Of course, for many people the enjoyment of all this is actually doing it - physically screwing together something that will make others green with envy or smile with respect, but not everyone.

For others, it's the driving of such cars that is the real pleasure, not the untold hours spent lying on one's back in a cold garage and, when you factor in the not inconsiderable savings that are to be made by letting someone else foot the bill to build a car and then buying it from them at market value, it suddenly starts to make a lot of sense.
In all styles of customised VW there are benchmarks by which cars are judged. If you're into Resto Cal and see the words German Folks mentioned in an advert for a car for sale, you can be pretty sure it'll pique a lot of people's interest. Likewise, if you're into Cal Look and see the three initials D, K and P (my dad's initials, by the way) run together, you'll be tempted to look further. And so it was when this particular Karmann Ghia was put up for sale a couple of years ago. Indeed, our own Ed, Ivan, was one of those who saw the ad and immediately knew this car was something special. Previously featured in the Cal Look issue of Hot VWs magazine in 2003, this '59 Ghia had all the ingredients to make VolksWorld's grand fromage go weak at the knees. Aside from the fact that it was a highly desirable Low light model, it had all the hallmarks of arguably the world's most famous hot VW club. Hunkered down over a set of detailed and polished Fuchs and resplendent in a fresh coat of its original black over Cardinal Red colours, it looked like it could hold its own at the traffic light grand prix before you even got to open the engine lid and see what lies inside.
