By the time you read this article, Greg "Woody" Wood and his rider, Ben Spies, will have graduated to the lofty heights of the World Superbike Championships. For the last five years Woody has been a race technician on the AMA Superbike Championship, helping ace rider Ben win four titles under the Yoshimura Suzuki banner. Through thick and thin the team has had its ups and downs, but success seems ultimately to be their forté. Winning titles is not just about riding skill, as behind-the-scenes preparation, set-up and detail play a huge part in being victorious. It takes a very keen eye and a skilful pair of hands to keep a serious contender on the rostrum, and by the time you have digested the fantastic photographs of the stunning two-tone Microbus featured here, I am sure you will agree - this is one fabulously well thought out and detailed ride and is a credit to its owner.
Woody is a Volkswagen enthusiast through and through, having owned a string of cool VWs. Presently, he owns, alongside this superb '67, a rare 1962 Double Cab and, prior to owning this Bus, he owned and restored a full-custom 1967 Squareback. The Squareback was the family's pride and joy and was used on a regular basis. However, Woody had hankered for a late Split Microbus for longer than he can remember. He wanted a good solid one to use as a blank canvas to build his own custom Bus with.
That Woody has an eye for detail is pretty much a given. However, his meticulous eye was even pernickety at purchasing level: "It took us five years of searching to find," says Woody, "and we found it advertised on the internet site theSamba." Located in San Diego, California, Woody and family were smitten the moment they viewed the Bus for the very first time. "We just had to have it," says Greg, "so we struck a deal on the spot and that was a straight swap for my Squareback." That was more than three year's ago now, and much water has since passed under the bridge.
