When someone has been modifying cars for 30 years like Conrad Garcia from Downey, California, they tend to do what they like rather than turn out what's expected. Conrad likes Resto Cal style VWs but isn't scared by the thought of trying something new, and there's nothing wrong with that in our book, as Cecil Beaton once said, "Be daring, be different, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary". Or in more basic terms, have the balls to try something new.It may or may not work, but at least you've tried, huh? And the scene would never move on if it were not for people
like Conrad.
It's not that his latest project is an all out custom with insane body modifications such as gull-wing doors or any of those shenanigans. It's a Resto Cal but it's instantly obvious there's a few things we've not seen done before. The theme is clearly ‘silver and red', but this doesn't just mean a silver car with a red interior. It means using red elsewhere to accentuate the paint and continue the theme. We'll get back to this later, as first we should give you a bit of an insight into the man, before the machine. Work-wise Conrad runs his own aftermarket custom wheel and tyre shop. He's been a car nut since he was 16 years old and has owned a very long list of air-cooled VWs over the years. He's also into Lowriders and especially classic Chevrolets - he owns two extremely rare examples from the 1930s, one of which, a 1938 Convertible, is one of only eight known to exist. But that's not the rarest one. His 1936 Phaeton is, as it's one of just two that were made!
