We regularly scour the Internet and classifieds for VWs for sale (what VW fan doesn’t?) and more often than not we see the usual examples - lowered, alloys, restored, paint job. I’m sure you know the story. And when you find a stocker it too is usually the recipient of a lot of repairs.
That’s not to say there is anything wrong with this, of course, and some of the cars are sound examples - it’s great that people have put the effort in to keep them going. But, as you all know, not all VWs are as well looked after and many are bodged together.
But as Mike proved last month with Peter Harvey’s 1958 (the cover car) there are still some excellent VWs out there to be found. All of us at VolksWorld loved Peter’s ‘58 which, considering all of our cars are modified in some way, is probably a little against the grain but even we can appreciate a car as good as his.
I remember thinking how lucky Peter had been finding such a gem and the chances of anyone finding another Beetle as good as that are getting slimmer as time ticks on.
But just as we were closing that issue I was informed of Warwick Gooch’s ‘57 Beetle.
