Andy Marks' '64 Surf Split

We've featured a lot of Split Screen Buses over the years, and a lot of Dove Blue ones at that, which is part of the reason why Andy Marks from Bournemouth knew he had to do something different if his was to stand out in a crowd. And stand out this Bus did, enough to earn it the Best Interior prize at the inaugural VolksWorld Camper&Bus Show in April. Yet Andy never set out to build a prize-winner, he just set out to build a useable Bus that would enable him to combine his love of Volkswagens with his passion for surfing.
Having spent a number of years working for the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) in the Queen's armed forces and then on civvy street as a mechanic, he was well placed to undertake the mechanical work on the ex-German Fire Bus he had in his possession, and wasn't afraid to have a crack at the metalwork either. But, as his painting skills left something to be desired, he had it in his head that the Bus would have, shall we say, a more unkempt exterior. The trouble was, he didn't have a place of his own to do the work so every evening after work he would wheel his Bus into the garage where he worked, do a bit more cutting, grinding and welding and then have to tidy up and put it all back together again so the workshop was clear in the morning. "I replaced pretty much every panel from the waist down," he told us, "but it took me three years to do it."

Saw this bus at Vanfest this year in the show and shine and for my money got the vote for best in show
So many vans and buses now seem to lack originality but this for me was far from lacking that
Top marks loved the interior simple and uncluttered . . . awesome
