Alex Bruce's '62 Resto
What did you do at work or college today? Whatever it was, chances are you didn't pull a Beetle out of a scrapyard, but that's just what Alex Bruce did almost 20 years ago while studying Car Design at Coventry University. Since then, he's moved on quite a bit from that scrapper in need of restoration and, as well as ascending the business ladder to the heights of managing director of his own specialist wallpaper company, has amassed an enviable collection of VWs - some daily drivers, like a New Beetle RSi, some weekend family wagons, like a 1981 T25 Karmann Gipsy, and some projects awaiting work, such as a '67 RHD Ghia coupé, a '54 RHD Oval and a 2.7-litre Corvair-powered Mk1 GP Buggy. You might guess from this that Alex is also no stranger to working on his own Volkswagens, but we'd say this guy has got it bad.
It's not all toys for the boys though, as the car here - the very one he pulled out of that scrapyard all those years ago - was built as a labour of love for his wife Naomi. Actually, it was more an apology as, despite Alex's collection of air-cooleds, it was Naomi's New Beetle that got sold when the couple needed to release some funds quick sharp for a property deal. "I promised to build her a Bug as an apology," laughed Alex.
