Notchster When Brain Burrows debuted his Squarrera at The VolksWorld Show in 2004, there was outcry in certain quarters. "Too much money spent!" cried some, "Only built to win the Best of Show award!" shouted others, "Should've gone to Specsavers!" hollered a lone voice from the back. And truth be known, some of this might have been true, but whatever your personal opinion of the car was, the reality is that it got people talking, and far outside of the VW scene, too. Because like 'em or loathe 'em, big-money show cars like that do push the boundaries, redefine them even and move any scene forward. Not all trendsetters have to have big money spent on them of course - take Billabug, for example - but there's no doubt putting a Porsche 993 engine on throttle bodies into a VW did kind of make people's jaws (and in some cases drawers) drop. There were never going to be a load of copycat cars built, for a number of obvious reasons, but no one can deny that the car put ideas into people's heads. Now we're not suggesting that either owner Howard Creps or the guys at Kustom Coach Werks in Colorado copied Brian's car, far from it, and we know from past experience that they've done plenty to push the boundaries themselves with radical projects such as Josh Perry's Fridolin (see VolksWorld August 2006) and a pair of the most radical chopped Volksrods that have yet been built (see the gallery at www.kustomcoachwerks.com to see more). In fact, the first of those Volksrods, the so-called VolKCWrod, has more than one thing in common with the car here. Firstly, the unusual colour combination is the same, secondly the name on the logbook is the same. That's right, Howard is the owner of both and, it's probably fair to say, one of KCW's favourite customers, this being the third car they have built for him in the last three years.
