Shane Lawlor's MK1 GP Beach Buggy

Shane Lawlor's Mk1 GP is not the kind of car you might expect a schoolteacher to drive, but then Shane isn't your average schoolteacher

Shane Lawlors MK1 GP Beach Buggy

Teachers Pet What did (or do) your teachers at school drive? My Biology teacher had a stock, white semi-auto Beetle, that much I can remember, but the rest had cars so insignificant that I can't even recall what they were. So imagine what an impact Shane Lawlor's Buggy must make when he roars into the school car park to take his Technology and Design class. The kids must absolutely love it! But it's not always been that way, in fact, Shane's path to this car will be a familiar one to many VW owners - all of us here included - and it's a path littered with potholes, unnecessary expense, dejection and the all-too-familiar cancer of the steel. "I spotted my first car, a '68 Bug, in the classifieds and bought it," he recalls. "After four years and spending thousands on it, and being stung by just about every 'expert' I went to, it just about ran but it had no heaters, its electrics were dodgy and the bodywork was disintegrating around me. It felt like driving a sieve, yet I loved it at the time." For the full story check out the March 2008 issue of VolksWorld magazine. On sale on 28th December and then available through back issues.
