Rudy's 1967 Custom Beetle
The owner of this drag Beetle, Rudy Olivença, amazed people in 2005 with his stunning Old School-styled '50 Split drag race Bug at the Super VW Nationals. But when he arrived at the 'Nationals this year with this car, people could not believe what they were seeing.
This is not just because this is a fantastic car, but also because Rudy proved to us that he was not scared to push himself to the limit in search of perfection! For those who do not already know, in May '06, Rudy had a terrible accident in the Split Bug at the 2006 show. Thankfully, he was all right, although he had concerns about his back.
The same could not be said for the Beetle - it was totalled! All the time, money and passion Rudy had put into the Split were reduced to nothing in a few seconds...
After something soul-destroying like this happens, you could easily lose interest in the hobby, but this was not the case with Rudy. Once he had got his head around the loss, he picked himself up and started all over again. And, as you can find out in the February 2008 issue, he did so very quickly, too.
