Dateline: The VolksWorld Show 2007, Sandown Park, Surrey, Friday 11am. A smiling but serious-looking fella puts his head around the door of the exhibitor's office. "Hi," he says, "I'm Sebastian, I have my car here..." We checked him off the list, issued him with passes and followed him outside to have a closer look at the car. Then we stopped. You know how sometimes you see a car from a distance and it looks great, then you get up to it and it's, well, not so great? Or you see pictures of a car and then see it for real and it is a disappointment? That wasn't the case with Sebastian's car. From the pictures he had sent prior to the Show, we figured that this was going to be a nice car, but when we saw it for real, we realised that this is a lot more than a nice car, it's a great car. And so with that, we had his car up on one of the coveted display plinths before he could say sausages, schnitzel and sauerkraut! Working as an engineer in the engine development department at Audi in Ingolstadt, Germany, you would expect Sebastian to be a bit handy when it comes to tinkering with mechanical things, but he is not just handy with a spanner, he has got an eye for what looks right, too. And he takes his hobby very seriously indeed. "I built this car while I was studying, to have some practical exercise in addition to all the theory," he told us. "But I originally got into the VW scene through a friend who drives a car in the German Käfer Cup Championship. Then a few years ago, I met Tobi [Tobias Pleines, Der Fieser Luftkühlers (DFL) member and owner of a wicked 2176cc '53 Oval] and we became friends. He showed me the Cal Look bible and other books and I started to live and love the whole Cal Look thing. I could not think of building a car in any other style now."
