1962 Cal look Beetle

Andy Jewell's 1962 Beetle

Andy Jewell's 1962 Beetle

Twelve years ago in our first annual California Look Special, we featured a 1962 Beetle owned by Andy Jewell from Southampton. Amazingly, he still owns the car today

Back in 1996, Andy was 22 years old and his '62 was a mildly modified Beetle, which was influenced by the Old School California Look cars that had come out at the very start of the decade. Bodily, it was stock, but it ran on EMPI Sprint Star wheels and had a lowered front end. The engine was a 1493cc with twin 34 ICT Webers. It was little more than a squeaky-clean car with an obvious inspiration. But a lot can change in 12 years, and has! More often than not, VWs change hands after being featured, and it is not unheard of that ex-feature cars fall off the radar and away into oblivion. In the worst cases, they are not looked after very well and end up rusting away, being scrapped or in need of another restoration. But this story is different.
Andy, now 34 years old, has not only kept his Anthracite Grey 1962 Deluxe Beetle, but he has also retained his passion for Volkswagens and is, if anything, more serious about them today than ever before. The '62 has traveled through a logical progression over the years, including various different engines of ever-larger size and power output. After a 1776cc with twin 40 Dell'Ortos and a Scat C25 camshaft, Peter Roberts built a hotter 1776 with 044 heads, an Engle 125 cam (he reckons "the old C25 didn't make enough power to keep my workshop door open!"), 1.25:1 rockers and 9:1 compression. This motor ran on Weber 48IDAs Andy got from Keith Seume. The 1776cc motor was later freshened up with a new crankcase and enlarged to 1914cc and the compression was raised to 9.5:1 again, using the 48IDA Webers.
When the 1914cc engine was fitted, the stock 1500 gearbox it had been running made way for a Rancho Pro-Street transmission with 4.125 ring and pinion and Sway-A-Way race axles.
Towards the end of 2006, Andy decided that the time had come to get really serious, as his circumstances were very different from how they were in 1996.
