Update on Steve's '61

This week the focus of Simon's attention has been the bonnet

Steve's 1961 Ragtop Project

As you can see in the pic above, once the paint was off there were some obvious high and low spots. Bug bonnets are a hard panel to get right, they show any small ripple as the curving nature of the panel always picks up reflections. The other issue is once you open the bonnet you can also see the inside of the panel. This means that the inside of the panel needs to be as good as the outside. Well it does if you ask Creative Coachworks, and I'd have to agree. So you can't just whack a load of plastic filler into the outside to get the panel straight as you can open the bonnet and spot the dent on the inside immediately. The answer is to properly straighten the panel by using a combination of heating and shrinking the panel, along with some good old fashioned panel beating.

With the high and low spots sorted, Simon moved onto panel fitment. After fitting the bonnet up he noticed the off side quarter panel and bonnet edge didn't align quite right. So he broke out the lead (for maybe the last time on my car) and built the edge of the bonnet up to line perfectly with the quarter panel. Nice work as always Simon!
