Jon Ladley conquers his fears and pushes the unknown switch in the Splitty...

Mystery Switch

The mystery switch

Ok, so since I got the Splitty I keep finding more and more new things out about it, and more switches that I don't know what they do - It's all very exciting, but can be a little scary when you push a new switch for the first time, not knowing what it might do.

The first such instance for me was the floor mounted switch - I had absolutely no idea what it was for. Initial thoughts centred around a fuel cut off theory, although this was disproved in a running out of petrol incident investigation (the bus has a Beetle fuel sender in a Splitty tank...). Anyway, talking to some slightly older people identified the fact that it might be the switch that does full bean on the headlights. It turns out it was, and I absolutely love this switch, I think all modern cars should go back to this method.

Anyway, I digress; this other switch (seen photo) is located in an almost invisible place underneath the top bit of the dashboard. I'd refrained from pressing this for a while, in the fear that something catastrophic might happen.

So last week, I pushed it in a bit of a panic, when I was trying to turn off a light in the back of the bus that I'd forgotten I'd left on. I'd tried pressing it because, when I went to pick up my roof rack, I spoke to the owner about his switches, and he said one of his turned off the interior lights.

This was wrong, but it did do something, but that something was spray the windows! I can't explain how excited I was! I've been trying to work out how to do that for ages - I thought they just didn't work, as I couldn't see the dash mounted water bottle. I'm sure on my Bay, you could press the wiper button in and it would operate the washer jets, not so in the Splitty.

I'm still really pleased about this discovery, but it has now led me to another problem, where is the water bottle? The investigation continues....
