You must remember the blue Oval Beetle built by Bernard Newbury? We featured it back in 1997 and titled the article 'Dark Lord', a name that current owner Max Jamieson has adopted for this amazing machine.
It has changed hannds a few times during which it has transformed from a show car to a race car and now into a wild street car!
You can read all about the different incarnations and history of the car on the Dark Lord Blog
It makes for very good reading and also shows you a few of the modifications the car has had. In fact reading the blog made us remember just how good (and crazy) this car is.
Make sure you check the blog out but for now here are some brief details.
1956 Oval, paintbox rebuild, dechromed, genuine cabrio decklid and pop outs. Running Centerline wheels.

The motor was fully rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago.
It is a 2387 cc with a Rimco mag case, Pauter 86mm crank, Pauter 5.7 rods, Jaycee barrels, Total seal rings. Mahle pistons, CB 2289 cam, CB wedgeport heads with 44x37 (long valve conversion,) hand ported and polished and Mega welded matched manifolds.
The compression ratio is set at 10.2:1
It runs a full MSD system and Weber 48 IDA carbs.
This little lot puts out about 200hp
In the transmission department you will find a Berg 5 speed setup in an Autocraft case running a Quaiffe limited slip diff.
It uses custom fabricated rubber mounts, a torque bar and has a hydraulic clutch.
Braking is taken car of with Neal front discs and Type 3 drums on the rear. It has Koni shocks all round.
The interior is a Bernie Newbury instal consisting of early leather Recaro seats with fat biscuit inserts and Porsche headrests, Simpson harnesses, wool headliner, roll cage, full Autometer set up, original 14-inch EMPI steering wheel, 60% Berg 5 speed shifter with early handle.
As we said, a great car and a whole lot of car for just price £18,500. Try building one to this spec for less than £25k
