More Air Ride work on the '60 Beetle project

Steve has been lucky enough to fit in more garage time and progressed further with his Air suspension
Another weekend and can you believe it another day in the garage?! The show season must be coming to an end if I’m actually finding time to get out into the garage!
I left you last time with the bottom air bag mount fitted to one side. So first things first, I had to do the same to the other side.
Isn’t a job so much easier after you’ve done it once? A little bit of confidence goes a long way towards getting a job done quickly and problem free. So in what seemed like no time at all I had the other side fitted up too.
Next up, was to mount the upper air bag mount. In the airkewld bolt on kit this is a cradle that sits underneath the rear frame horns and then kicks up and over the lower bag mounts I’ve already fitted (see pic’s if you don’t know what I mean). This then bolts through the frame horns. The trick here is getting the cradle central over the lower bag mounts and symmetrical side to side. Once this was in I fitted the air bags into place loosely and checked to make sure the bags sat the same side to side. This is one of the reasons to centralise the upper cradle. The air bags need to sit the same side to side so that they take the same amount of air pressure to inflate.
With that done it was time to take the pan off the axle stands and see just how low this girl was prepared to go! As it turns out pretty f****** low! The camber of the rear wheels it totally ridicules and just the look I was after! And with more weight in the car she’ll come down about another inch!
I was so excited I quickly chucked the new airkewld front beam on and mocked up the front air shocks and the front trailing arms. But unfortunately that’s as far as I could go with the front as my drop spindles are away having new king and link pins fitted. So I propped the front up on a 2” block of wood.
After moaning about not being able to lift the body off on my own I’m soon going to be moaning about not being able to get it back on! I badly want to see it all mocked up with wings and wheels!
I probably should say that at this stage that this is a dry build. I’m just checking everything fits and doing any cutting and drilling before anything gets painted and powder coated. I want to plumb in and test the whole system before the car goes off for paint as the last thing you want to be doing is cutting and modifying anything after that point as that’s when accidents happen and your fresh expensive paint job gets scratched, chipped or worse. So don’t panic! I will be painting and detailing everything before she hits the road.

Next stop is finishing the front end, fitting up the front brakes and as I said, getting the body back on
Stay tuned kids...
