The future's here, the future is air ride!

Air ride suspension from AirKewld

The latest additions to Steve Goslings project ‘60 have arrived. And it’s exciting stuff.

In my quest for a nice usable car, I kept coming up against a problem. How to get the car silly low, with out constantly whacking the pan on the floor and shacking my fillings loose. The conclusion I came to was air ride, it was the only way to go. Sit the car on the ground when parked, lift it up a little for cruising around shows and put it up to a sensible(ish) height for the open road.

As you’ve probably read in VolksWorld over the last few years, where air ride and VWs are concerned there’s one company name that always comes up. Airkewld. Pete Skiba the man behind this company has been developing his kits for years and boy does he know his onions. A quick call to the man himself had all my questions answered and a plan was formed.

On Pete’s recommendation, I went with one of his brand new scratch build front beams. 31/2” narrowed naturally! With air shocks. On the back we went with Airkewlds new bolt in rear air bag set up. Yep bolt in! No welding! That means should I ever want to remove the air ride and return the car to stock, I can and it’ll barely leave a trace.

While the credit card was out, I decided to go with a pair of Pete’s forged drop spindles and his BAD front brake kit. In Porsche stud pattern so my planned Fuch will go straight on.

The UK importer for Airkewld products is Retro Dubs (www.retrodubs.co.uk 01872 561194) So my order was place with them and I sat back and awaited my parts to arrive. If you’ve got any air ride questions give Retro Dubs a call, they’ve got the full Airkewld set up on their shop Trekka so they’ve been there and done it already.

So now it’s all here what do I think? I think I can’t wait to get the 60 on air. The kit is a proper piece of work. It looks simple to set up and everything’s been well thought out. The brakes look wicked, I went with stock VW calipers and not the snazzy Willwood versions that Pete also sells as I think the stock ones are more in keeping with the look I’m after.

Basically bar a pair of rear drums and a pair of 41/2” Flat 4 Fuch for the front (anyone out there got any they want to part with?) I’ve now got everything to dry build the whole set up. So I can see exactly how it will sit. All I need is the time to get out in the workshop and fit the lot up.

More on this as soon as I’ve made some progress!

Not all Cal Lookers need a huge engine to make their point, as this 1956 shows. Its beige bodywork, however, looks the part to a tee
