Care package from America

Early script Gene Berg Shifter

We received a nice little surprise in the office in the form of VW related produce!

It was a very nice surprise when Noel, our post room dweller, came to our floor announcing "VolksWorld... package for Jon" at the top of his lungs!
The surprise of course was not the presence of Noel but rather the parcel he was clutching (and had already opened I might add... cheeky wotsit!)
Inside was a number of VW accessories including a cool T-shirt, a few Bug In 32 plaques and badges, some rubber pedal covers and some iron-on patches. I had no idea who had sent it or why... until I dove a little further into the box.

Then like an express train rushing by at speed it all came flooding back.

A few months ago we had published a letter from one John Messersmith in the US. He was informing us of his project Cal-look Bug he was working on and supplied a few photos. The ride was looking very cool indeed and we asked for John to keep us updated. We liked it that much that we made it letter of the month. Consequently John was sent his winning polish!

Clearly this went down very well as a month or so later out of the blue I received an email from John saying my shifter was on its way. "What shifter?", I thought before going about my daily routines.

As I fingered the early script Gene Berg quick throw shifter I thought to myself "ah, THIS shifter!"

I have to say that for John to send such gifts you would have thought we were doing him some sort of favours! He has been very generous indeed and we are totally overwhelmed with the VW accessories he sent.

Another treasure hidden inside the package (saving the best till last) was a box with a Buggy painting on the front and Dune Buggy written down the side. I was stumped on what could be inside until I read on the side "Avon - Old Spice".
Yep it was aftershave! But not just any aftershave! This variety came in a Buggy shaped glass bottle with an engine doubling up as the lid.
Yes the shifter was an amazing gift but the aftershave - well, this is pretty rare and we all love it!

John, if you're reading this, you are a diamond! Thank you!

Not all Cal Lookers need a huge engine to make their point, as this 1956 shows. Its beige bodywork, however, looks the part to a tee
