Der Fridolin

James and Der Fridolin

James, the new boy, takes the Fridolin under his wing to make a few repairs.

This is our Fridolin! The photo you see here is of our latest team member, James Peene, performing a 'hello sailor pose' to show how excited he was to be taking the Frid under his wing.

Here is the story of how we got to own the Fridolin all those years ago!

Going to get the car was a real mission, it hadn't been driven for years. We had to travel to deepest Germany to get it and drive it all the way back to England via Spa! It was really exciting as we had only ever seen pictures of Fridolins, let alone driven one.
Mike Pye took on the mission of getting her running, after finding her parked up in the field and then drove it all the way to Le Bug Show in Spa, Belgium.
It took ages to register der Frid with the D.V.L.A due to the usual red-tape; proof of age was the first thing and easily sorted as VW provided proof it was built in 1974. Then we had a lot of problems as it was classed as a commercial vehicle, then the very helpful people at the tax office wanted to give it a M registration, the only problem was they wanted the M to be at the start of the number plate, as in 1994, not at the end as you would expect on a 1974.
We had to get the vehicle inspected to prove it was what we said it was. In the end we got it all sorted out and then sat back and waited for the registration number. Eventually the Registraion Document arrived and at long last the car was legal for use on the road.
The numer we got was XGF 259M - but we doubt it refers to the VolksWorld Fridolin being an Xtra Good Fridolin!?! Since then we have looked at a few wiring problems and then the '74 ex-Swiss Postal Services van was off to Santa Pod for The Big Bang.
We drove it up to the show and had a few goes up the strip. The best time was a 20.21 second quarter mile at 64mph, not bad for a breeze block on wheels powered by a 1641cc (Thurrock Big Bore from Big Boys Toys) with Kadron carbs.
The Frid has since seen many new owners throughout team VolksWorld and each has loved it as much as the next. Sadly though, each new owner has had their own projects to work on so the Frid always got pushed to the back. Now, thought, it's a different story! Mr. Peene has joined the team and has takn it upon himself to get the few niggly problems corrected. First up he has changed the exhaust as the old one had a whopping great hole in it! Next on the list are the tyres; these need changing, the beam needs fixing and a new gearbox is on the cards. Once these are sorted, a fresh new MOT will be on its way! Happy days!
