Garage night

Posted by Jon on 19 July, 2012

Team VolksWorld had another garage night last night.

Followers of our Instagram photos, facebook and twitter posts, and indeed this blog, will be aware that we’ve recently got back into having regular garage nights again. We used to have them every week for a while, but what with marriages, babies, house moves and all that stuff associated with coming of age, the garage nights had been pushed aside.

But now the dust has settled (all over our cars) we’ve swung open the doors and charged in. Truth be told, Steve has been busy beavering away on his ragtop project in the barn on his tod, but at least now he has some company now and then.

The latest Peene acquisition, a 1966 1-family-owned Beetle, has found its way into the collective. He’s stripped off all the chrome and has been hard at work buffing the paint/patina back to life. You can read his blog post about the “Penny Pincher” here.

As mentioned, Steve has been working on his latest project – a 1961 Ragtop Beetle that will be riding on air. Readers of VolksWorld magazine will know that the body has been away at the paint shop and the ‘pan has been fully detailed. The quality of work is mind blowing. Last night his task was to rub down the steering wheel in order to make a few repairs and prep it for paint.

And as for me, well I’ve been tinkering away at my 1961 Ragtop. I’ve recently got the restored steering wheel back in and the horn wired up, and finally got the fog light switch wired in too. I’ve also been convinced to detail my Fuchs and get them on the car. So that’s what I was doing last night. Two wheels are now painted, with the rear two left to do. I’ll give them a good old polish before getting the tyres fitted. I also plan to paint up a set of standard steel wheels so I have a second set of wheels to change to should the mood suit. The next plan is finish my 1500 engine build and get it in the car. This stage of the project is currently waiting for me to finish balancing the pistons.
